The town center project restarts a multi-year eff ort to develop a heart of campus for students, faculty, staff , neighbors, and visitors. Set on a simultaneously sprawling and heavily siloed campus in California, the design team has been tasked with developing both program and design strategies for a series of interventions in two existing buildings as well as two new building sites. On a campus where bikes reign supreme, the site is currently primarly a “through” place in between student housing and department centers. Most members of the campus community choose not to spend time in the site, despite its proximity to core campus services and programming.
In the spirit of designing a place for everyone, it has been just as important to design a process that is accessible and inclusive of the diverse community on campus.
